Start with the running watts of every tool you plan to operate simultaneously, then add the surge watts of the single largest motor in that group — compressors and lifts draw two to three times their running load at startup. Size the generator so its rated running wattage covers your total running load and its surge rating exceeds that single-motor peak. Undersizing causes voltage sag that trips breakers and shortens motor life.
A conventional generator produces AC power at a fixed engine RPM, which means THD (total harmonic distortion) can run 10–25%, high enough to damage variable-frequency drives, battery chargers, and computerized diagnostic equipment. An inverter generator produces clean sine-wave output, typically under 3% THD, by rectifying the AC to DC and inverting it back — the engine also throttles to match load, which cuts fuel consumption and drops operating noise significantly. If you are running anything with a processor or a sensitive power supply, the inverter design is not optional.
